Major landforms of South America

The Amazon Basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. The basin is located mainly (40%) in Brazil, but also stretches into Peru and several other countries. The South American rain forest of the Amazon is the largest in the world with dense tropical forest.

The Andes is a Mountain System, it is the largest mountain in the Americas and one of the most important in the world. The Andes is located from South America all the way to panama, it’s the source of most mayor rivers, and it has volcanoes.

The Atacama Desert is sparsely populated; it is the aridest desert in the world. It’s a cold place and rainfall is very rare, the landscape is covered with borax lakes, lava flow remnants and saline deposits.


The Brazilian Highlands runs through the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Goias, Bahia and Saopaulo in southeastern Brazil. It includes mountain ranges, namely the Serra de Mantiquiera, Serra do Paranapiataba, Serra Geral, and Serra do Mar.

 The Guiana Highlands they stretch from southern Venezuela across the northern edge of South America to the tip of Brazil. It is made from a plateau, tropical rain forests, rivers and waterfalls. This place has the highest waterfall in the world named “Angels Fall”.

The Llanos is a large and very fertile plain, located in eastern and central Colombia, and central and southern Venezuela, is drained by the Orinco River and its many tributaries. The economic importance of the plains is that this is a region suitable for ranching and agriculture.

The Patagonia is located between the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean, and it stretches south from the Rio Negro River in southern Argentina to Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. It has a barren land, it is rugged and it is famed for a striking scenery and beauty. Patagonia was named like this by one expedition that was made by Ferdinand Magellan when they come into contact with natives Tehuelche, who were called Patagonian.

The Cordillera Central is in Dominican Republic.

The Cordillera de Talamanca is in Costa Rica.

The Cordillera Isabelia is in Honduras and Nicaragua.
The Maya Mountains is in Belize.
The Sierra de Bahoruco is in Haiti.
The Serranίa de Tabasara is in Panama
The Sierra Maestra is in Cuba.


Major landforms of North America

Alaska Range: It extends from Alaska Peninsula to the border of the Yukon Territory, Canada. The Highest point is Mount McKinley, the second Mount Foraker and the third Mount Hunter.

Appalachian Mountains:These Mountains are gentle and low. They extend from central Alabama in the U.S., through the New England states and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Quebec.  The Appalachian Mountains contain major deposits of different types of coal.

Brooks Range:They are mountains of northern Alaska, and its highest point is Mt. Isto. This mountain range forms the northernmost drainage divide in North America, separating streams flowing into the Arctic Ocean and the North Pacific.

Canadian Shield:It is a plateau of northern and eastern Canada and the Great Lakes area of North America. The highest elevation is Mont d`lberville. It has rocky and rough surfaces, and large areas of forests. The Shield is one of the world's richest areas in terms of mineral ores. It is filled with substantial deposits of nickel, gold, silver, and copper.

Cascade:Is a mountain range from northeastern California across Oregon and Washington it presents massive snow-capped volcanoes. In the most important landforms are Mt. Hood, Mt. Ranier and Mt. St. Helens. Soil conditions for farming are generally good, especially downwind of volcanoes.

Coast Range:They are mountains running along the Pacific Ocean coastlines of California, Oregon, and Washington, but they also extend along the western border of British Columbia, Canada, and southern Alaska, all the way to Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island. The San Francisco Bay is the major landform. It has glaciers and rugged and scrub-covered hills.

Coastal Plain:Is an area of the southern and southeastern U.S that extends to continental shelf and it is characterized by its flat level land with forests, this coastal areas include swamps, marshes, bayous, mud flat, bayous. The coastal plain alongside the lower Mississippi River may be associated with a sea which had existed 6 thousand years ago.

Great Plains:They extend east from the Rockies and to the edge of the Canadian Shield and the western edges of the Appalachians. The Great Plains are a broad expanse of flat land, much of it covered in prairie, steppe and grassland

Rocky Mountains:They extend from Mexican frontier, up through the western United States, into Canada, and eastern Alaska. Much of the mountain range is protected by public parks and forest lands, and is a popular especially for hiking, camping, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowboarding.

Sierra Nevada: Its highest point is Mt. Whitney; this mountain range is located at eastern California. The Sierra Nevada was home to several Native American tribes. The range was first sighted vada: by Pedro Fages

Sierra Madres: The Sierra Madres includes two major ranges, one is smaller than the other one, and they are: The Sierra Madre Occidental runs through Mexico Pacific Ocean, the other is Sierra Madre Oriental that runs parallel to its Gulf of Mexico coastline. The Sierra Madre del Sur is located in the southern Mexican States of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Its major landform is Cerro Potosí.

The history of the Americas name is because there was an Italian navigator that called Amerigo Vespucci was that first are the first person who relized that the Spaniards didn’t arrive Asia. And German Cartographer that called Martin Waldsemüller was the first cartographer who drew a map of this other continent.
The political divisions of North America are: Canada, United States, Mexico, and Greenland.
The political division of South America is: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Cayenne, Georgetown, and Venezuela.
The political divisions of America Central are: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Greenland.
The political divisions of Caribbean America: Cuba, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St. Vincent and The   Grenadines, St Lucia, and St Christopher and Nevis.
